It'd be easier to do in MU format then it would to do it in MMPORG format.

But within MMPORG format...

You could basically keep the battle system constant with previous games. But it'd be hard to keep anything else the same.

The only way a Lunar game would work in MMORPG format is if they break the entire game down (in programming terms) like that of Guild Wars (every zone except cities is an instance) and they frequently have each major section of each major instance govern by a staff member of which applies a story line that does not contradict the over all world. Otherwise, it will just be a nice looking game of cyber walking and hack'n'slash.

Let's not forget that one of the key things that make Lunar really worth our time is the animation.

I agree with Angelalex242. You could do many good things with the battle system. However, that's about all you could do.

love a riddle wrote:Hmm... I wouldn't mind, as long as it had a story. FFXI had a story and an end, although you could keep on playing after that. If they do it like that, that might work, but then the whole party thing and story would need to be pretty impressive to make it work.

That's true, but you fall under a first-come/first-serve society. You'll eventually be solo'ing the game if you join late. You'll not see much help until the later levels, and you'll endure great difficulty for a happy theme based game. Society is ment to be tidious and MMORPGs tend to quickly and easily fall off topic. Several reports were written that at least 80% of the world's gamers don't pay much attention to the story theme of any MMORPG. Lunar is all but that. Let's also not forget that when you play Lunar, you're acting as the role of 1 character (the main character (e.g. Alex, Hiro)). In a MMORPG, you'll not be one of those roles. Instead, you'll be playing the role of one of them towns people you don't pay much attention to in the game.

Through my experience, I would choose to play Final Fantasy 7, 8 and 10 over the online version anyday. The plot is just far stronger in the single player version, and you don't have to wait 2 years before you can see the end of it.

In short, you'll get more out of a Japanese Animated series of Lunar then out of a MMORPG. I do not think an online version of Lunar would work at all.

I'd really rather not have an MMORPG-style Lunar... I have always disliked the genre of game... I'd much rather play solo on a console. Especially with a game like Lunar, Lunar is not made to be a massive multiplayer. Though I did like what G1 suggested. However I am also rather cynical about it, part of the MMORPG style that irks me is the constant need to play in order to get anywhere or anything. Everyone is so materialistic and greedy I get bored really fast. Though that could just be my own experiences with online gameplay. I do play one online game, Guild Wars, but only because it does not require me to pay every month and I do not feel guilty for missing a week or two of gameplay.
Though, once again, I'd much rather have Lunar three be a console game as the previous two were. Anime-cut scenes, great voice acting, and an intelligent story will get my money every time.

*sits back with a bucket of popcorn and a medium coke*

I guess I should give my two cents, as I never saw this topic until it was revived now Oo

I think a Lunar MMORPG would be nice, but difficult. One of the things I liked about Lunar was 1. Voice acting 2. Anime cutscenes 3. sprites instead of 3D 4. Story

From the MMORPGs I have played, none offered much of those 4. I think it could be done, but it would have to be done carefully.

Edit: Oh, and they have to make it to where you can't be a Dragonmaster, so maybe the timeline would HAVE to fall after SSSC, or mayber before and just not allow anyone to be a DM.

...Actually...

I disagree about Dragonmaster.

Basically, it'd work like 'High Warlord' in World of Warcraft. If you put THAT much time in it, you can be Dragonmaster. Until, of course, as in Dragon Song, some other guy comes and pks you to steal the title.
Don't blame me, Lucia promised me lots of snuggles and cuddles if I would be her PR guy.

There is one way that an online Lunar game could feasibly limit the Dragonmaster title.

Since you have to visit each of the four dragons to gain it, then there's room for discretion. You can be real powerful and put a lot of time into being a Dragonmaster, but still fail because of how the dragons choose.

Even then, it'd have to occur in a pre-TSS world. Perhaps 500 years ago during the Magic Empire? KF

Well, I think there was 2 Dragonmasters at once (the twins) but other than that I think there is usually just onbe Dragon Master. It could be done in a way that, since in the games it was made clear that more than one person can take the trial, as Kiz said, let the dragons decide what happens. So say, 1 Dragonmaster per server, but still you can have plenty of high end characters (Like Mel, Lemia, Ghaleon, Kyle, Mia, Nash, and Jessica.)

I just don't see Lunar as a feasible online game. The story is what makes Lunar and giant fetch quests does not make for an engrossing game. Lunar is a game where a chosen few are destined to make a change, and having thousands of people competing for power is not what the series is about. Yes, they could make a Lunar MMORPG but it certainly wouldn't fit the bill.

hehe the idea of going through the ranks of Vane does appeal to me though. Maybe I'd even get to hook up with Lemina at some point...oops, that's not a thought that needs my out loud voice.

That's what makes me think that the only way it'd be remotely feasible is if you were to set it 500 years prior to TSS, during the rise of the Magic Empire.

There would be a few elements during that era that would work:
1) Two competing sides: Humans / Beastmen, and the Vile Tribe. There's some intermingling between the two, and also a 'neutral' group or two, like the fairies or "mermaids" (Magic School only).
2) Vane and the Cathedral institutions are still there, so people can rise up the ranks through magic schools (Vane or perhaps other lesser ones, like Ien).
3) There's still the possibility of having a Dragonmaster. Since there's no exhaustive list of Dragonmasters, that wouldn't be entirely impossible.

I can see it being pulled off. But the main deal is that there's no possibility of that kind of development being put into it, or a large enough user base to make it work. KF

Well, if FF ever comes within a 100000 mile radious of the Lunar name, I'm gonna buy me the biggest, baddest, meanest gun out there and bust a cap in my head. *sigh* Too bad they outlawed me from gun shops ;-;

100,000 mile radious... Lunar did that in Lunar 2 Complete.

Note the really big bird that they had pulling the wagon when you first get Jean. They actually start to say Chocobo, but then change it to Chocicobo to make it so that they don't have copyright infringement against them.

I like Lunar and all, but they could've been a little more creative than just changing the name of a chocobo.

With the focus of the next gen game systems being focused on online gaming, I doubt that there are goting to be very many games that are single player games.

Uh, it was meant to be a joke. I'm sure they could have come up with something better if they wanted to.

Well, it was just an unnamed giant bird in the original dialogue. KF
