Yay! Pop Culture Refs in WD Games!

Post by Shiva Indis »

I pulled out Magic Knight Rayearth last weekend. It's such a nice little game, and it had been years since I last played it.

While flipping though the instruction booklet, I found an Oingo Boingo reference that made me laugh out loud. Something like "Monsters love little girls, they make them feel so bad."

I'm sure it would have gone right over my head when I first got the game. I didn't know thing one about the band at the time. But after rolling my eyes at that in the most loving and appreciative way I know how, I thought of the Oingo Boingo reference in L:SSSC -- the game over "It's a dead man's party!" one.

I wonder if there are others? I figure if there are two, there must be three.

(BTW, the post-April Fools joke is that I'm not being sarcastic. Well, under 15% sarcastic.)

They definitely toned it down a lot in their later years, but there were still a few slipped in. Off the top of my head I remember a soldier in Growlanser III saying "what's so civil about war anyway?"
