Playstation Store Selection Question

Post by localflick »

Does anyone know how PSN selects the PSX games that end up in their store?

It seems very random to me, and I always assumed it was a combination of games that work well with their psp emulator, filesize (though after FF7 and FF8 maybe that's no longer considered), and possible licensing/legal issues.

The 3 newest selections are:
Magic Carpet
Mass Destruction
and Sorcerer's Maze

Now I played a lot of PSX in college, and I've never heard of any of those games or remember seeing them in stores, but they are "classics". Somehow Tekken 2 is available but not 1 or 3. How do they pick these things???

I have a normal psp I use with psn and an unlocked one to play my own converted psx games on. If a game I've converted gets released I always buy them from psn to encourage them to release more, and oddly enough the save file usually works. But I really don't understand the selection process.

On a side note if you're browsing the psn store today you may notice that the icon for Dead or Alive Paradise is just a pair of boobs. No face, no body, just boobs. I'm amazed at how blatant that series is getting... it went from being a fighting game, to a volleyball game, to this which I think is still a volleyball game but that's not how they're selling it. Maybe the next one will be softcore porn who knows?

I couldn't agree more. I think they just use a chicken with its head cut off to figure these out. I would love to see Chrono Cross on PSN.

Monkeys throwing at a dart board.

The two games I really want most are Suikoden II and Legend of Mana. The former seems likely enough, given they've released the first game, but I doubt the latter is popular enough, even though it's probably the best game to ever grace the system.

As for DoA Paradise, I haven't played a DoA since DoA 2 on the Dreamcast. Every single release I feel less like catching up with the series.

I thought Legend of Mana did really well. I remember buying a hard to find used copy for $40. If Magic Carpet is a classic LoM is too.

Obviously the Lunar games would be nice too, but I really prefer the remake, or I should say "rebirth" of the games instead of the $5.99/$9.99 psx classic treatment.

Like cds and mp3s I love collecting something tangible, but then having a digital version with me on my commute. I love the idea of storing the games internally because that way I always have them with me without a pocket full of umds. It would be really nice if you got a download voucher with a umd to put the game on your memory stick, but that'll never happen.

Well, I'm sure Sony does have some control over the selection. However, it's probably really difficult maneuvering through all of the legal issues involved.

I was sure most games had some sort of install feature, where you could save it to the memory stick for smoother play. I've never used this so Im not sure..

It costs the publishers money to release games on PSN, and I really don't know how they structure their releases. They don't want to release high priority titles all at once so unfortunately they spread them out with filler.

Also known as the "Virtual Console method." And as Nintendo has demonstrated, the right filler/awesome ratio is enormously important, or people become apathetic to new releases.

To be fair, Magic Carpet is a classic, at least for me. It's an early 3D flying game. I only ever played it on the computer though.

But they sure are digging at the old games.
