Help with pricing prints for convention

Post by PrettyGirlJean »

Hi everyone!

Well, for me, it's that time of year again. Otakon is just around the corner and I'm not sure what to set my price for my prints this year. Last year I feel was much too high, but I wanted to experiment, I sold my color prints for $10 and my b/w for $7. This year I was thinking of selling my color prints for $7 and my b/w for $4... but I wanted to do a little research and ask around. So, if you have a moment please participate in my poll and let me know why you voted as you did, I appreciate it more than I can express! :)

Thanks a lot and take care now!

EDIT: Heh, sorry I forgot to post a link TO my artwork ^^; Please click on the following: http://vanstane.deviantart.com/gallery

Firstly I do like your art, and I voted to go ahead with your plan to sell at $7 and $4, which might sound like too little (especially for the black and white) but in the end you may end up selling more prints. Though I am curious as to which prints you're selling... you've got some really pretty ones! ^^

Oh, here's an idea! Size some of your prints up to 11 x 17 (it's a really big size, but it's the largest size Kinko's will print before they have to put your image on a big big plotter) and sell those for $10. I saw a girl at Acen make a LOT of money that way-- I saw ppl walking around with her prints all the time
:D
Otherwise, I'd say $7-5 for smaller prints (at least that's what I'm pricing mine at for Acen).
I found my old siggie! MUAH HAHAHAHAHA!!!

Wow, I hadn't thought about that! Thanks Lucia, I don't know why I didn't think about that... I guess people wouldn't mind paying a few dollars more for a bigger/poster size.

Yoshi, thanks for your reply as well :) I'm selling quite a few of the prints in my gallery, all of the chibi group pictures, a couple lunars, inu yasha, and some from the other series. I'm hoping to finish my lunar premade badges. I've drawn all of the characters from EB and I plan on selling those at the con for $5.00, they will be laminated and have "Otakon XIII" across the top and a space at the bottom to write your name. So while $5 may seem like a bit too much I don't want to lose money selling them. I actually make, I think, the majority of my money from my custom badges where I will draw customers as chibis with their favorite anime/manga/video game characters, really with those though the sky is the limit. I just don't do anything graphic, though "chibified" that'd probably be more funny than anything. Those I sell for $4 since I draw them on the spot, they also come with a badge holder while my supplies last.

My main goal is to have fun, but I do hafta be realistic and try to make or at least break even so I can cover the cost of attending... but I digress (sorry!). Thanks a lot for everyone for voting ^^

I'm think that $6 or $7 may be my magic numbers ^_^b

Um, did Otakon reverse their decision not to allow fanart in the gallery this year?

This is news to me. KF

You are allowed 25 prints of each piece of fanart. Buttons aren't allowed and T-shirts and some other merchandise aren't allowed. It's a real gray area still though. I'm gonna have original and fanart prints and then the custom stuff.

Man, Otakon is so weird with their policies like that. They also won't let anyone share the masquerade (like if people video tape them and upload them to the internet) b/c they're scared of being sued over costumes and copyrights? Weird...

I really wouldn't put the blame with Otakon. A lot of what they do is in response to the major companies with which they work, and when a company's legal team makes a certain demand, then unless you can afford the lawyers, you pretty much have to acquiesce.

At Japanese conventions, fan art is pretty much encouraged. Not just 'cause companies know that it helps them in the long-run--with encouraging more fans of their respective series--but because a lot of major artists themselves got their start with fan-art. I do believe a lot of creativity in the US has been hampered more than helped by this obsession with copyright protection. KF
