Cosplay Prop
So, being a die hard anime fan who frequently regulars conventions, I feel as though I am pretty much expected to cosplay. Because of this, I have been practicing with several different props, one of which is the sword of Althena. Honestly, Im pretty horrible at it all so far, but this actually ended up pretty decent. Here's what I've got.
This is where it all went south. I decied for the coil effect on the hilt, I would just make it excessively bulky, giving me some excess room to carve it in, and while it wasnt a total failure, it is by no means flawless.
So, overall, not too bad for my first attempt I think. Ill try it again with what I know now and let you know how it works out.

Indeed, keep it up! Is that a solid piece of wood?

Three pieces. I cut out one piece that was the entire length and shape of the sword, and two more for just the hilt. Then, I glued the slabs together, clamped it so it was secure, and sanded it so all the pieces conformed with one another. Next time Im gonna try and mold it out of clay and make a latex mold. Make one solid sword.phyco126 wrote:Indeed, keep it up! Is that a solid piece of wood?

Sword!
Pretty well-done. You're probably being overly critical of your own work because you're close to it, but from here it looks very good.

How would you have made the prop Miri? I've seen your stuff and it's obvious you're a veteran. I chose wood this time around just because I'm experimenting with all the different resources. I tried insulation foam and fiberglass cloth, but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get a smooth surface.

Oho, you flatter me, but I'm still learning myself! I've never made a sword before, but since I don't really have a good setup to work with wood, I may have tried foamboard or cardboard for the main parts, and craft foam for the details? I guess I couldn't say for sure until I actually try it.
Several layers of Mod Podge has worked for me in the past with getting a smooth edge. I'd just paint a layer on, let dry, sand, and repeat as needed. It CAN take several layers, but it works well when you're done.
I think you're doing fantastically as you are, it looks fabulous so far.

Re: Cosplay Prop
Wow I am speechless except for a few questions on how you made that thus far.
1) O.O What did you use to grove the handle? Did you just sand your way through?
2) Not really a question but that is epic

If I make a sword, I'm hiring a master swords smith to make me on that can cut through 50 feet of concrete! Yes... I shall rule the world by sword. MUA HAHAHAHAHA!

I used a dremel, a pointed sander extension.Gegi wrote:1) O.O What did you use to grove the handle? Did you just sand your way through?
