Publicity Photo for Acrobat

Post by Pisces »

For those of you who don't know me so well, I do a lot of theatre, and this summer our theatre group, the Reannin Theatre Group (Reanning was Coley's middle name, for those of you who remember her), will be producing one of my original scripts and staging it at a local venue. The title of the play is Acrobat.

Basically, in the story, the main character's closest friend committed suicide one year ago, the same night he met his current lover, and the script is largely about his inability to face the emotions from that night and how it's changed him, as he damages not only himself, but his relationship and the friendships around him.

In the story, the friend slitted his wrists in the bathroom of his apartment. There is a kind of abstract character in the story named The Dancer. Much of the play takes place in nightclub/bar type scenes, and so The Dancer often expresses a lot emotion in the story in dance sequences at these settings, and she also embodies the strong emotions that were born from that night.

So we wanted a picture of her in a pose in the doorway of the bathroom, flooded with red light. We did this at my place and simply used some 25 watt red light bulbs and a digital camera.

As for the cool ghost-like effect of The Dancer's image repeating itself, that was entirely a fluke that ended up looking really cool. We have no idea how it happened - one of our shots just ended up that way, and we kept it as our photo.

Anyway, here is the link. It's a large image, so it'll take time to load, but it resized on my computer once it was done. We're going to photoshop it a little too, to make some of the surroundings a little clearer.

Our play is going up in August, so we're using this photo for the publicity posters.

Sounds really neat! I'd love to actually see it in person, though I am not certain I'm in the right area... The picture's unintended effect is rather cool I say. Nice touch.

Nice ghosting, intended or not. Is that person wearing glasses? I personally would have used a different stance, especially considering she's in a doorway. A smarter choice would have been to use the vertical element of the doorway by having her standing against the door frame in the center and outstretching her arms with a sullen expression to really play on the emotion of color. It's hard to explain without being there, but that's just my opinion. Best of luck with the show.

No, she's not wearing glasses.

And we actually wanted her in a kneeling position, it correlates with a moment she's going to use in her actual opening dance to the play.

Okay, as long as it has a purpose. I think it's the whole coming out of the bathroom stance that doesn't work for me.
