Hmmm... I probably haven't read too many scary books... they don't tend to scare me so much, though I feel other emotions from them. Perhaps... oh, there was this one story when I was little I'd read. From some anthology of scary stories. It was about these two kids who met this Gypsy girl, and she made the kids do bad things to their mom and baby brother in order to get these drums. They did all the bad things, and before doing the last one, the mom threatened that she'd run away and leave them with this old rickety woman creature monster thing with a glass eye and a broomstick tail... And of course it happened. And I was scared pantsless by the mental image of her for days.

"Than seyde Merlion, "Whethir lyke ye bettir the swerde othir the scawberde?" "I lyke bettir the swerde," seyde Arthure. "Ye ar the more unwyse, for the scawberde ys worth ten of the swerde; for whyles ye have the scawberde uppon you, ye shall lose no blood, be ye never so sore wounded. Therefore kepe well the scawberde allweyes with you." --- Le Morte Darthur, Sir Thomas Malory
"Just as you touch the energy of every life form you meet, so, too, will will their energy strengthen you. Fail to live up to your potential, and you will never win. " --- The Old Man at the End of Time

Oh wow...what a question. I used to read TONS of scary books when I was younger, though they don't seem all that scary to me any longer.
I would have to say the scariest book I have read is actually "Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman. I loved it. It is one of my all time favorite books. But, it has such a dark sinister quality to it mixed in with such casualness that it just gave me chills. Eric would know what I'm talking about.
