Christmas Music

Post by GhaleonOne »

Just to throw a non-metal topic out here... (:P)

With it being Christmas and all, anyone else out there listening to a lot of Christmas music? Any particular favorite songs or albums?

Actually, it's the ancient carroll's that I like the most. Most new stuff has never really interested me. Stuff like Do You Hear What I Hear? and What Child Is This. I've been hoping to find new renditions of those songs by other artists, as I seem to listen to the same versions of those songs every year and wouldn't mind trying a new take or two on them.

I've always been fond of songs by Manheim Steamroller and The Transiberian Orchestra. Instrumental Christmas music is my favorite kind as I get kinda overloaded with the lyrical-poppy Christmas songs at work. Ah the life of retail!

There's a few things I like that are Christmassy. I already mentioned Sufjan Stevens's Christmas album that he just released in another thread. And there's that old No Doubt song "Oi To The World." (I can't stand what happened with their sound as they got more and more famous... and Gwen Stefani's whole solo pop career just makes me sorta sick... but this song is from their older days, when they were more in league with bands like Rancid and Reel Big Fish.) And I sorta love this song.

But you know what I've always found sorta hilarious? Kenny G has two Christmas albums... and he's jewish.

Well, I've been listening to an unusual amount of Enya, which suits my Christmas spirit well.

There's one Christmas song in particular that I like, and would love to have a good version of... that gets stuck in my head when I don't even hear it, and there's a good West Wing episode centered around Josh, hearing this song, and PTSD. Carol of the Bells!

Hark how the bells,
sweet silver bells,
all seem to say,
throw cares away

Christmas is here,
bringing good cheer,
to young and old,
meek and the bold,

Ding dong ding dong
That is their song
With joyful ring
All caroling

One seems to hear
Words of good cheer
From ev'ry where
Filling the air

Oh how they pound,
raising the sound,
o'er hill and dale,
telling their tale,

Gaily they ring
while people sing
songs of good cheer,
Christmas is here,

Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas,
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas,
On on they send ,
on without end,
their joyful tone to every home
Dong Ding dong ding, dong Bong

Haha, I can't help but laugh when I think about Enya. Not so much because of the music itself, but because of Margaret Cho's stand-up routine where she talks about her. It's fairly hilarious.

Adeste Fideles (O Come All Ye Faithful)

Angels We Have Heard on High

Ding Dong Merrily on High

Mary Did You Know?, but only the version by Michael Crawford

Let There Be Peace on Earth

and finally, it may seem out of place, but:

Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree, by Brenda Lee

Merry Christmas!
