Mastodon's latest release, which comes out on the 11th of September, Blood Mountain brings their own brand of conceptual metal to new heights. Brann Dailor, drummer of the group, brought the concept of Blood Mountain to the table. Blood Mountain is rooted in Howard Bloom's book "The Lucifer Principle" and the idea of the "Reptile Brain," the instincts that humans had since they came out of the sea, specifically the "fight, -Fatal Hopper- and kill" instinct in Brann's words. From their, the idea of Blood Mountain came into being. The concept is that a man is climbing up Blood Montain to find the Crystal Skull, which he then replace his own skull with. The Crystal Skull eliminates the "Reptile Brain," and human evolution moves onto the next step. Mastodon has certainly evolved once more, Blood Mountain is an amazing achievement and I anticipate their rise to the ranks of the metal greats.
