Stop Online Piracy Act

Post by LunarRaptor »

I think it goes without saying that this is a bad idea and everyone knows it. However, what are the chances of it passing?

Sadly, its chances are good. Depends on how much the politicians are making from the RIAA and MPAA.

I didn't know if many people were following this one. I get emails about this sort of thing from time to time after the Supreme Court case. From what little I know the web sector is majorly opposed and that's a pretty good sign.

I wrote my representatives about it. ^_^

It sounds the tiniest bit like the censorship China and whoever gets. So I'm sure that makes other people go ape -diamond-. o_o

Well, we don't have to worry about it now. The President has promised to veto it, and vetos rarely get overturned these days. Internet neutrality is even a part of Obama's reelection campaign.

Well, SOPA just flatlined, and PIPA is expected to as well. Good day, I say.

Neither have flatlined. They just moved the date for debate, which is why blackouts by sites like Wikipedia and Reddit will still be effective tomorrow. ( http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/201 ... to-protest ), ( http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/18/techn ... =2&_r=1&hp )

Well, they're both harmless now. Now we just have to worry about ACTA, which I'm told is probably not going to pass, either.

ACTA was already signed by the US (link). Key thing to remember is that it's an international trade agreement, not the same as a US law. That's not to say there's no reason to worry, however. If it's ratified by 6 signatories then it goes into effect, and there are some troubling consequences (more info). KF

Obama cannot properly enforce without congress's help, and already the act is having trouble in the E.U. I think it's just going to be a do over of the SOPA and PIPA: amounting to absolutely nothing.

This is a bit of old news, but a little update on ACTA is that it is having serious trouble in most of the signatory nations. Ratification looks unlikely at this point -- I certainly hope.

Yep. Even though I knew it was old news, I figured I'd better put it on this thread, regardless.

When I was talking about 'old news', I was actually referring to my post, not yours :) KF
