w00t, what an excellent major! I took a couple of game design courses myself as an undergrad.
Get yourself a head start and check out Python and Pygame. Python is my favorite programming language, and a lot of universities are actually using it now to teach beginning programming because of its power and simplicity.

Great job. I hope you enjoy it in Northern California. I don't know if you live up there already but I live in Southern California and when I went up there it was like a different state.
