Vane Airship Stories Tidbits

Post by Shiva Indis »

Flipping through the various doujinshi i noticed a few things; hopefully I'm not treading over familliar ground here. Funato notes several of Nash's ancestors who appear in Confession of the Soul and Memories of Confessing. They are all identified simply by Nash's family name, Ru-makku (was it Ramuck in the English version of Lunar Legend?). The ones that appear in Confession of the Soul are pretty obvious since they have the flippy hair and rather haughty demeanors. The Ru-makku character in Memories of Confessing is even more minor, and harder to spot, but also has weird hair.

Confession of the Soul was the first of these stories that Funato wrote, and originally she called it Lunar Confissao. She writes that she got this name from her favorite song from a Portugese group named Madredeus. (I'm listening to some Madredeus as I type this, and it has a kind of pastoral, mystical sound, and I don't think it'd be too unreasonable to characterise them as an Iberian Enya.) I did a little research, and the song Funato refers to is titled 'A Confissao' in it's Portugese release, and 'Tamashii no Kokuhaku' (Confession of the Soul) on the Japanese release.

Funato has some seiyuu earmarked for some of the characters in Memories of Confessing. I haven't noticed one for Ghaleon, but Morris's is Inoue Kazuhiko (Kakashi in Naruto, Hatori in Fruits Basket - I love this guy), Rouj's is Ootsuka Akio (Laike - perhaps this is significant). Tagak has one too, but I can't make it out.

Finally, a scrap on Nia, the little Ausa girl who follows Ghaleon around in Memories of Confessing. She got her name from the fact that she is the only person who is close to Ghaleon when this story begins - in other words, she is 'near'. (When the Japanese approximate the English word 'near', it sounds like her name.) Funato apologizes for that one.

I always wondered about the Portuguese name in Confissao. Thanks for these bits, they're interesting! Neat that Nash's family is in the manga; I'll have to look for that. I always liked that she drew Alex's father in Recalling the Scenery. (? I absolutely suck at remembering the names for these, which I suppose is kind of humorous regarding titles about memory.) I believe Nash's last name was Rumach in Legend, but it might be Rumack.

What was that from, by the way?

Thanks GhaleonOne. I was afraid UbiSoft had mangled it, but that's pretty good. :)

Alunissage, the part about Confissao and the Confession of the Soul Rumack twins (oh, I didn't mention that, did I? They're fraternal twins) is in the Confessions of the Moon doujinshi. Since there are images of the magazine version still floating around, I can point them out here, on the left.

The rest is in the Vane Airship Stories doujinshi.

They're never mentioned by name, are they? I'd think I'd remember something like that... KF

Oh, that picture is familiar...that's when they arrive in Vane, isn't it? And come to think of it, I do remember that rather upturned updo, but I didn't think to compare it with Nash's. And...argh, I really need to pound these names into my head. Page 56, right? And are the Nia comments from page 22 of...the other 1998 Vheen sketchbook, the rest of whose name I don't know?

I just found where you got the avatar pic from, too. Now I'm wondering what the rest says, like the BGM comment. ^_^

Kizyr: These characters are not named in the stories themselves, but they are identified in Funato's collections of notes and sketches.

Alunissage: Yes. The twins are on page 56. The mention of Madredeus is at the top of p.43.

Oh, here's something amusing. Page 42 has a layout for the scene where Ghaleon takes the book from Remilia in the Vane library, and next to it Funato writes:

"When Mr. Shigema was looking at just the script for this page, he said 'I wondered if you were going to do something H here'... How cruel...!"

And correct again, Nia's on p.22 of Vane Airship Stories... and the earlier Nash ancestor is on 29 (pretty small, though).

I love that page that my avatar came from, because it's a sign that Funato is as crazed a Lunar fan as any of us here - she wants every aspect of the game to be perfect, and -Borgan- when it's not. In the BGM comment she's complaining about the anime direction when Zophar delivers (what looks to be) the Japanese equivalent of

Big fat EB Spoiler
"Destroy me with Althena's power and decimate this miserable world in the process."
...and the subsequent shocked looks. I seem to remember that there is a long stretch of silence on the SegaCD version there, but it's been too long since I played the remake to recall. At any rate, if there is music there in the remake Funato does not approve.

I don't remember what that scene had BGMwise either, even though I had to sit through it three times in a row because my SCD crashed twice after the scene and before I could save. (Well, one of those times was me discovering the Lemina Bug all by myself, but the Leo Bug doesn't work as well.) I have a Japanese game sort of close to there...well, maybe not; I was about to go into the Black Dragon Cave.

Edit: I'm an idiot and didn't look closely at what you typed when I wrote that. Well, I don't remember that scene in the remake, either, but maybe Pisces can tell us since he just played through that spot for the first time. My 77 EBC saves went kaput or missing long ago.

Shigema said that about the script? Isn't that scene silent except for Lemia denying her tears? To be honest, I never really got that part, or a decent handle on Ghaleon's motivations in general in that story. Reading it in translation probably doesn't help. I'm glad Funato didn't like his comment, though; as a lifelong prude I have a hard time reconciling that kind of juxtaposition.

I see the other Rumack. And clearly I never bothered to look closely at the name of that sketchbook next to the manga. >_< I only got that one recently though, and haven't taken the actual manga off the shelf since before then.

Strangely, it's standard Zophar BGM music.

Lucia vs. Zophar actually plays when you fight Zophar's second form, after Lucia breaks free, even though you'd think it should be playing during the animated actual Lucia vs. Zophar fight.

It's still one of my favorite tracks on the CD, though.
Don't blame me, Lucia promised me lots of snuggles and cuddles if I would be her PR guy.
