Stuck in the Red Dragon Cave (Japanese Saturn SSS)

Hey guys! It's been a while since I posted--hectic life, kids, crazy Japan giving me asthma, yada yada yada.
I'm playing through the Saturn version of Silver Star Story, and I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to advance in the game. I have no magic and I'm fresh out of starlights (or whatever they're called in English). I'm coming back to the game after a hiatus, so I don't exactly remember what's happened. According to the PSone walkthroughs, there's some way to heal any time your stats get low, but I can't seem to find this magic spot.
I have no save games from before the cave, and there's basically no way I can beat the two demon dog/beast thingies without refreshing my stats.
Am I totally screwed? Does the Saturn version not have any way for me to heal? I obviously can't leave on the balloon. I'd really hate to have to start the game over. Any tips?
