I'll give you a piece of advice since you're still early in the game - and hopefully give it to you without revealing spoilers.

When you get later in the game to the point where you have to perform a quest line relating to the Black Dragon, whatever you do, LEVEL UP AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE!! Level up, level up, level up, LEVEL UP!! Seriously. Get into a super long marathon of leveling up, and gain as much magic points as possible to level up each character's magics and have plenty of room to save in an additional slot (never could understand why Working Designs thought it was a good idea to have the player use magic points to create saves). Don't worry about wasting extra money to buy healing items or equipment. Just do it. Try to conserve the amount of times you save during this level up period too, as since you know each time you save you have to spend magic points which could go towards leveling up a character's magic, particularly focusing on leveling Hiro's, Jean's, and Ronfar's magics.

The reason is you will face an antagonist in battle that will probably make you absolutely HATE LUNAR Eternal Blue on the SEGA CD. This particular antagonist's attack patterns are really unfair to your party, and if you're at low levels it's pretty much impossible to survive more than half a dozen rounds. It can get so bad that if your levels are too low it puts you in a near stalemate of being able to advance the story, thus you have to go back to an earlier time (hence why I said make sure you have enough magic points to create a backup save). The only way I got past it the first play through was absolute sheer DUMB LUCK. Even at high levels you'll still have a rough ride.

The cost for saves is 15 x Hiro's level. It really isn't a problem for most of the game as the amounts of M Exp you get from battles goes up much faster than Hiro's level does.
