A little audio clip

Post by Zhane Masaki »

I'm not sure if this topic has EVER come up on the boards, but has anyone ever, out of sheer morbid curiosity or just for kicks, thought of putting a VIDEO GAME CD-ROM in a CD player?

Over my many years of perusing the net, I came across something rather hilarious that first brought this question to mind, and it was Eternal Blue that started the whole thing!

Well, long story short, if you happen to put a video game CD-ROM disc in an audio CD player, you'd find it couldn't be played as a music CD. Very rarely, there would be a hidden audio track or two.

In Japan, however, the hidden audio track on video game discs was taken to a whole other level. In some PC Engine and Mega CD games, you'd hear short audio clips of the game's characters improvising a skit telling you that this CD can't be played as a music CD.

Examples of systems I found this oddity for:
Sony PlayStation 1
Sony PSX
NEC PC Engine Super CD-ROM^2
NEC PC Engine
Sega Mega CD

And I now happily share with you, the very clip that started it all...Hiro and Ruby's "This ain't no audio CD!" message!

Awwww.

I know in the case of Skies of Arcadia, they actually made such a message for the American version. Now that you put it that way, though, I guess they just translated the message. Thanks for pointing this out!

There are numerous game cds I used to listen to in my cd player. Lunar:TSS, Virtua Fighter 2, Guardian Heroes, etc. It was always nice to find a game that could be played on a cd player. I never bothered with Eternal Blue because I had the soundtrack early on.

I normally don't try to play game disc in a cd player, though I did once for Lunar SSSC and it did have a hidden track which surprised me. >.>

You can listen to the ending theme of Thousand Arms if you put in Disc 2.

I always put game discs in CD players because you never know what you're gonna find. If you're lucky, you'll get an awesome redbook audio soundtrack (like in Lunar:TSS, Virtua Fighter 2 on the Saturn, and a bunch of other games), although there is danger of spoilers (TSS's redbook audio soundtrack also included the sounds for the cut scenes, so I accidentally found out Ghaleon's true motives long before I would've in the game). Other games may have a track or two of redbook audio even if the game's music isn't, like EB for the Sega CD and the two vocal songs. Finally, you may just get something hillarious, like track 2 on Dragon Force...

If I'm not mistaken, at least one such track was required on Saturn games, and it had to advise people not to play game disks in CD players.

That works for Dragon Force?! Sweet!!!

Yeah, I tried this on the Sega CD years ago. Lunar, Spiderman, and Ecco all found their way into my CD player. In fact, I've probably played the Ecco games more as CDs than as game disks over all this time. Never thought about any other systems, though...

Dragon Force doesn't have a CD soundtrack -- sorry if I confused you. It does have a comedy warning track though...
