Luna was originally Elena?

Post by Kizyr »

So I took a look at some hi-res scans that Alun sent (I'll post scaled-down versions later), and there are a few arrows pointing to Luna that refer to the name "Elena" instead. I checked the Lunar I+II Artbook, too, and found the same name crop up in the sketches--though nowhere in any printed text. It looks like perhaps "Elena" was an early name for Luna while TSS was still in production. KF

VERY interesting. I didn't even bother to look at the text 'cause I was too busy staring at the lovely image. XD

What did the book caption with that piece of art say?

By the way, folks, there was an intermediate sketch between those two, with the line art outlining the characters, but it doesn't have any text, so it's not referenced here. I think G1 will be making an update with all three soon.

Oh, something about Luna/Elena's scarf, I think. I'll have to check. But I only saw it in one sketch. KF

So, early name: Elena
Early hair color: Brown (from another thread i saw)

Ahhh nice XD.
Well it kinda destroys some people's childhoods too, you know! This is info that no one would know if it wasnt for pure curiosity.
But very interesting at the same time.

It's used in several places, but most conspicuously as the disc art for the third printing.

Not to mention the other Elenas that crop up in video games. It's at least as popular a name in J games as Lucia. The one that comes to mind most readily is the priestess from Grandia II, as well as the agent in FF7.

Interestingly, Elena is a derivation of the name Helen, meaning light or torch in Greek. And, according to the Wikipedia entry on the name, it could also derive from Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon. (The Roman goddess of the moon being, unsurprisingly, Luna.) I rather like this name. ^_^
