Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

I've been playing Shin Megami Tensei V. I'm traveling through the second major section of the Underworld, about level 32, and I'm about ready to stop. The exploration is great. The game strews tokens and other findables across its landscape. The use of vertical space in a non-platforming game remind...

Re: Crypto currency

As a non-financial expert who knows a thing or two about rhetoric, the language around NFTs and cryptocurrency also sets off warning bells for me: The fact that ads exist to encourage you to buy cryptocurrency suggests they need to convince people to buy it to generate value, rather than it existing...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

I've been playing **Dungeon Encounters**, the Square Enix dungeon RPG, on the Switch. The game is basic and has virtually no story, but it has my pulse gameplay-wise. The game starts from a simple premise: ATB gameplay with two basic types of attack/defense (physical and magic) and Pac-Man-style dun...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

I'm deep into Horizon: Zero Dawn. It is tickling that exploration whimsy, as well as rewarding strategic uses of existing resources. I've also been gripped by the narrative more than I expected. I'm over halfway through, and I'm aiming to wrap it up in time to switch to Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righ...

Re: First playthrough

^ I think if I rushed it, I could beat Lunar 1 in 12 hours or so. Otherwise, my timing and level are usually pretty close to Gryzz's - talking to NPCs, backtracking for red chests, and the obligatory bath visits put me at 20-25 hours.

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

I have Legend of Mana preordered, and I very seldom preorder games. I loved the original and haven't replayed it in 13 years, so I'm looking forward to devoting my summer to the game.

Re: First playthrough

I've been lurking on this thread, but I've enjoyed your takes. Do I need to bother back-tracking through any old dungeons for the chests, or is that correct? A few more red chests are in dungeons, but they aren't necessary for beating the game. Kind of like the bromides, I'd recommend not worrying t...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

Dragon Quest VIII was the first one I beat. I found the world map exploration so fun that I kept handmade maps so that I'd be sure to know where else I could find something new. Regarding the tendency to overlevel, Dragon Quest XI (and the 3DS release of VIII) handles that better with non-random enc...

Eid Mubarak!

Do you use that calligraphy set for writing in Japanese as well?

Re: TSS text fun

So the idea is that Alex puts on the heavy clothes, which makes him an adventurer, and that's actually reflected by the in-game sprite and dialogue. That's pretty cool!

Apparently my mood of the week is very much Morrowind remixes. Here's Dagothwave: "I'm a god! How can you kill a god? What a grand and intoxicating innocence!"

Re: Elemental Icons in Battle

That's a field effect, which gives a bonus to damage from that element while suppressing opposing element damage. For instance, using Call Earth (a spell unlocked with the Earth Crests) will allow you to set the field effect to earth. I found more detailed information here: http://www.rpgdl.com/foru...

Re: #BringBackLunar

Alright, all of this discussion got me curious to take a look at their website. A few things I notice: 1. The website overall could use a redesign. I got a 1990s vibe from it, which isn't bad, but it takes some persistence to dig into the news or find the content I was curious about. I actually miss...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

I never disliked Squall, but I was pleased to realize that my memory of him as a moody teenager had skipped over how thoughtful and reticent he could be. I've been playing Star Ocean: First Departure R on the Switch. I'm trying to do it entirely blind and without a guide, which is proving interestin...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

I replayed Final Fantasy VIII last year! I have a lot of nostalgia for the game, since it was the first FF game I owned. In this playthrough, I admired the ambition of the scenario writing the most. The Laguna sequences in particular involve a lot of player trust for how unusual and unexpected they ...

Re: Last Anime?

^ Are there other 1990s anime that hold up nowadays, especially thematically? I've been selectively going back and watching a few episodes of series I loved back then, like Record of Lodoss War, but I don't know where to start with new series. (And I never was a big anime watcher - the Sci-Fi channe...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

I've been playing Little Hope, which is in the same vein as Man of Medan and Until Dawn - heavily based on conversation, QTE, and cluefinding, with a lot of importance placed on both what players know and what characters know during the story. LH (roughly Salem-themed, but mostly taking place in the...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

I played Disco Elysium, which focuses on an amnesiac cop who has to solve a case in a downtrodden corner of the world. The game is a bit rough, treading a thin line between making politics a part of the setting and being too didactic, but it succeeded in telling a story I was entertained by and in w...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

I just finished a move, so I've had little time to do anything else. I've dabbled in Breath of Fire 2, since I can easily play the Switch version for 15 minutes before bed. I also have carved out a bit of time with Crusader Kings III, which hits the sweet intersection of grand strategy and roleplayi...
