Re: Spells in Lunar 1 and Lunar 2 versions

Say, would you mind having a crack at approx translations for Nash's TSS spells? I originally had them pasted into the post but decided it made things too long. I also can't be 100% certain I transcribed them correctly, as I did it the hard way (squinting to pick out a radical and guessing a stroke...

Re: Spells in Lunar 1 and Lunar 2 versions

Alun, these/you are a treasure! Fantastic stuff. One of the stranger things about TSS is that they didn't even have MP costs listed for spells. I guess it did encourage us as little kids to do the equivalent of drawing our own dungeon maps in Phantasy Star II, meaning that we actually had calculator...

Re: EBC playthrough thread

Ah, I come from a lot of places, but the land of kakaa-denka is one of them. (Women are indeed strong there, but I think that the winter winds are far more brutal.) Kiz, you're right about the strangeness of using kakaa in any event: on its own, it's an affectionate and polite Edo-era way to address...

Re: EBC playthrough thread

Ah, you beat me to it, I was going to build on WD's second accidental character-creating goof-up to suggest that English lore must now insist that the great Kakar is the descendant of Fulari of Burg. Kakaa is a pretty bad mistake to make, even for a novice, and as Kiz noted, there's a big cue in the...

Re: EBC playthrough thread

So I find myself constructing a backstory for them, that maybe they argued about elitism vs egalitarianism, since many NPCs talk about Miria being welcoming to both magicians and non-magicians, e.g. opening the library to all, when Borgan was still a member of the Guild. Is he made out to be as poo...

Re: Question about packaging.

I may not have your uncanny attention to detailed differences between sprite placement in the EB remakes  You probably would if it was between Mega-CD (JP) and Sega-CD (US) versions of Lunar 2. Haha, you give me too much credit: I just happen to know both languages but I bumble through games w...

Re: Question about packaging.

I may not have your uncanny attention to detailed differences between sprite placement in the EB remakes, but I sure do remember what this package looked like! I recall that the case has four spindles for Disc 1 (first spot front inside left), the soundtrack (second spot front inside right), the doc...

Re: EBC playthrough thread

Oh nonono, I mean that PS EB is a sloppy port of SS EB! I have much harsher words if MCD is involved. In that scenario, the SS version is FFVI advance, and the PS version is...FFVI iOS. Yes, that sounds like the guidebook I was thinking of! If not there, it's in the WD instruction book's translation...

Re: EBC playthrough thread

You are all nuts. I love this place. jay_are, great observation on the subtle graphical differences. On the Equip icon, I think the simple answer is that the PS version of EB is a low-fidelity port and they've just let some slopping stretching happen. They may have added a dungeon or two and added m...

Re: EBC playthrough thread

Alun, this is so wonderful. For all the woes of the remake, the unpretentious, "lived-in" feel of the world persists, and it's one of the greatest draws of the Game Arts of old. People often assume that this is Working Designs talking, but it's true in the originals as well (even if some o...

Re: EBC playthrough thread

Edit: Oooh, you meant a different expression on Hiero's character portrait rather than the dialogue. I just watched the same sequence on Youtube, and you're right: he has his puzzled expression in the original but a sad expression in the WD version, which matches the more expansive dialogue WD game ...

Re: EBC playthrough thread

Yesss. Sadly, if you've played the MCD version, the remake animation just can't hold up on repeat playthroughs. Compared with anything else but Lunar, the remake's cinemas would be great, but Gonzo did such a slipshod job---the EB remake cinemas are pretty infamous in the few corners of the Japanese...

Re: A tiny itty bit of hope!!

Good point on the US-only Steam version of Grandia II, Sonic#, which does indeed sound to be very well-done! That US-only release had completely slipped my mind (Steam is pretty sad in Japan for various reasons), since I was thinking of the prior PSN re-release of the PS2 Grandia II port. Once we se...

Re: A tiny itty bit of hope!!

I should clarify: each of the games I listed above was a compromised Playstation 1 or 2 port of a superior original release. So, the ideal scenario would have been to re-release the Saturn version of Grandia I, the DC version of Grandia II, and the Saturn version of Eternal Blue. I suppose it's less...

Re: A tiny itty bit of hope!!

I guess so. We don't have Japanese screenshots up and while I did play some of the Saturn game years ago, I either didn't notice then or didn't remember. Have no idea where my notes are now. Have you had any music slowdown? IIRC, dealing with that was one thing that delayed the WD release, and I do...

Re: GungHo/GameArts survey about porting games to PC

Very interesting! Funny thing is, I saw no sign of any such movements on the Japanese side, leading me to think this is an American initiative. By contrast, Game Arts in Japan has been re-releasing old games on PSN for their 30th anniversary, though as expected, it was all Grandia and no Lunar...I s...

Re: GameArts (Grandia/II & Lunar) Collection

I can certainly see why someone wouldn't like WD, especially now, though considering what a path they blazed in their time in terms of having actually well-written scripts, I think many people would forgive the incidental chatter or pop culturisms in their early releases. The quality of writing in t...

Re: GameArts (Grandia/II & Lunar) Collection

Handsome line-up! You might enjoy adding the marvelously drawn Lunar 2 Asuka Comics DX comic illustrated by Kaori Naruse. It was always quite cheap, like around 700Y, but it's out of stock in most places now. I'm sure it pops up from time to time, though. This reminds me how I always meant to play G...

So Lunar could not only use technical improvements but better marketing. I wonder what Studio Alex has to say today. N, nothing...they have been dead for ten years. :( Coming full circle from the start of this thread, aside from the fact that the original staff are scattered to the winds, even if a...

Re: Lunar Analysis and Ideas

Hm, on second thought, scratch the doubting comment of mine from earlier. Even if I don't get what's going on, no sense in discouraging someone who is interested in something. Apologies, carry on~
