Re: Lunar Analysis and Ideas

To echo Alun: huh? The "deep analysis" would benefit here from noting that Eternal Blue came out two years before Nadesico and that humor as mixed with fantasy is not unique, nor are stories with multiple plot arcs.

Re: Genders of historical characters?

Thanks, Kiz, I just looked at a video for the Black Dragon sequence, and unlike the neutral screenshots on the site, I see that the full dialogue does make clear that she's a she. (Whatever gender means in dragon terms.) Also just spun through SSS for similar confirmations, often through Nall's dial...

Re: Hacking potential

I may be biased because I actually owned a Sega CD, and I think that would've been the only way the Lunar series would see the light of day in the US. Considering that that's how I got into this fandom, I wouldn't want that to change. Ys is a fandom I've always wanted to explore. I think 3 and its ...

Re: Hacking potential

TG-16 though? That was beyond exotic. So exotic that I only recently started to make sense of it. It's interesting to think about since the situations are totally flipped! While no one could touch Nintendo in the 16-bit era in Japan, the closest rival by far was PCE, whereas I've never met a real l...

Re: Hacking potential

That's it! TSS looks very...Ys! Even Arhes' hair is orange like Adol's instead of brown per Kubooka's design. Lunar: (TS)YS. (Side note: imagine how much better sales (in Japan) would have been if Lunar had been a PC Engine series instead!) But seriously, more than a Nihon Falcom look, I'd say that ...

Re: Hacking potential

Well the art style changed between TSS and SSSC. The latter seemed to have influence from Evangelion and the former is more like late 80's anime sort of style. I noticed a difference but I do agree that it should be altered a bit in that regard. Ah, but SSS came out barely half a year after Evangel...

Re: Hacking potential

Yes, yesss! That is so excellent. I recall another championship-level American rewrite in Althena's shrine with this really paranoid guy whose insanity progressed throughout the game and whose dialogue tree was like eight lines long. He might've been the "game over" guy, but I'm not sure. ...

Re: The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers

Anyway, what am I trying to get at? I think that the creators used words like Napalm, Homing cannon, Atomic burn, and all these things only to give the player an idea of what level of powerful Lucia is, which really works better than if the game made up words for those spells or had given them othe...

Re: Hacking potential

I like the ALL CAPS, actually. But I wouldn't mind some of the typos being fixed. What I've really, really wanted to do is a fan hack of EB, actually. First mission: to make the treasure chest contents and placement make sense. Lemina's best two crossbows should not be in the same dungeon one floor...

Re: Genders of historical characters?

Thanks for the pinpointed areas, Alun. As Kizyr correctly has it, Dragonmaster Lui is definitely male...here, he's the Dragonmaster who came together with Althena to the Blue Star, and the mark of whose first step is thought to be somewhere in Lunar. (Side note: I feel like someone here at some poin...

Re: Genders of historical characters?

This is a great topic, and sensible---no reason to assume things were "male" when not stated. If you know a specific event where they're mentioned, that's easy to cross-check now via youtube or nico, but if it's in some town's library, that might be harder. I fear Lui may be one of those. ...

Re: The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers

Yeah, I'd described him originally as a gunslinger, but must've edited that out before posting. That was what made it truly random to me. Though perhaps it's of a piece with Lucia having spells like Napalm Shot and Plasma Rain and other things that don't fit in with the usual Lunar spells. I love t...

Re: The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers

Seeing as how we're talking about it anyway, I should probably take advantage of my twice-yearly visit to talk more about Sieg the Risen since he might be my favorite boss outside of Ghaleon. I loved the mountain pass duel, and I remember freaking out when I realized it was him while searching for D...

Re: The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers

Yes, like Alun said, that's not really him...in the US version of EB remix, they made a friendly nod to his absence by renaming one of the Guardians, like the other one in the spring. The real guy was Sieg the Risen on MCD, really the Star Dragon in disguise, who ambushes you in the mountains for a ...

Re: Late news, but a passing in the LUNAR family

Hm. I played the Japanese EB up to just after the fight with Borgan, but I don't remember anything about the voices. But I'm hoping to play that version again this summer. I would guess that he wasn't the Ghaleon on the Lunatic Festa CDs, since they would've used the SSS seiyuu? Right you are, thou...

Alunissage wrote:I remember the insane laughter on the Japanese TSS disc. Presumably that was him.
It was indeed. Like John Truitt, he toned down the crazy and upped the sneering in Eternal Blue, to great effect.

Re: Late news, but a passing in the LUNAR family

This is probably as good a space as any to note another Lunar passing at the end of last year: Rokurou Naya. He lent a ghostly, wavering voice to Ghaleon in all entries except SSS.

Perhaps an appropriate send-off:

Re: We need more fans.

Oh, I've been around here from time to time...more back when the series was truly alive. I should note that my gloomy forecast is not for any dearth of love of the series. I did this for G1 one time in my free time in about ten days in a rush, for instance, because the games were so important to me:...

Re: We need more fans.

The sad irony of fan disappointment in Lunar's vanishing profile and nonexistent sequels is that its trajectory essentially mirrors Althena's in Eternal Blue, in what we used to call "the Goddess' suicide" in the mid-1990's: "Lunar" as people remember it has been dead for many ye...

Re: Favorite Lunar song?

Hopefully it's not too late to join the party! Lunar~EB: Ghaleon~The Return (Mega CD only) In Mega CD Eternal Blue, Ghaleon actually has three themes (another casualty in the remake): this one (Ghaleon's reapparance, Ghaleon overlooking the Dragonship after he attacks Leo, Ghaleon aboard the Dragons...
