Re: This Christmas: The Wham! Challenge

^ I find it really ingenious for this reason. It's just common enough that I must have heard it before, but it's just obscure enough that I had to learn a bit about the song first. 3 days to go. Still good. This is after several shopping outings, coffee shop visits, and lots of YouTube videos on bow...

Re: Should I play this?

I thought and still think it's a merely okay game. Most likely I'll never play it again. Early on I liked the job system, cards, and the combat reasonably well, but the equipment breaking and some other elements really turned me off. I'd say if you're really curious, watch a Let's Play of the first ...

I didn't realize that PS1 RPGs weren't on the PS4. Sadface.

Welcome Maus! You sure got the font for your signature up in short order. :D

And don't worry about little mistakes in your writing. We all make them, and your post was perfectly comprehensible.

Re: Final Fantasy XV

I'm still about 25 hours in and still in chapter 3. Almost level 40. I finished that drive along the coast, which included finding a dungeon, a few difficult monsters, and a combat that I died in and now consciously avoid. I continue to be charmed by small things, like seeing a tram line above me. A...

Re: Final Fantasy XV

Caelum can equal heaven too. I hadn't thought about Sword-Lily Friendship (Gladiolus Amicitia); I just read it as "little sword." The names seem no more silly than the second meanings of many of our own names. Substitute Latin for Germanic and Hebrew, and suddenly I'd be named Supplantus o...

Re: Final Fantasy XV

It wasn't my intention to define RPGs, but rather to say that I enjoy the minigames and small details that RPGs tend to capture well. What's an RPG? I don't think there's any one thing that makes or breaks RPGs, but a long list of things that the games we call RPGs always have, usually have, and som...

Final Fantasy XV

So I got a PS4 on sale last week and decided to play Final Fantasy XV. The reviews were good and I completely skipped all of FFXIII because I didn't have a PS3. Anyone else playing? What do you think? (Spoiler tags for particularly key story information, please.) I've been averaging about an hour a ...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

I ended up getting Final Fantasy XV and a PS4. I'll let you know how it goes. I got a pretty good deal on the system and figured there would be a few RPGs I could play through the system, both new and old. (Suikoden 2? Persona 5?)

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

I started Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright. So far I'm enjoying it, though it's quite a grind to get through my current mission. I need to figure out how to get across a river without having that unit immediately slaughtered. Hmm, that description makes me want to play Valkyrie Chronicles again, a game...

Re: Nintendo Switch console revealed!

What's a Playstation, or a Saturn, or an X-bone? Branding finds a way. I'm looking forward to this console. I've liked everything Nintendo has produced, but this time it definitely seems like they're also getting more third party support on board. I'm fine with ports like Skyrim; I also hope they pr...

Re: Jessica: strong female character or missed opportunity?

I don't think Lunar has the traditional views on relationships that you do. To be clear, it does follow some traditional ideas of gender (which may or may not conform to ideas in your country or region), but I don't see the terms "alpha" and "beta" applying to them. Much of your ...

Re: Jessica: strong female character or missed opportunity?

^ That's the crux of it for me. In the discussion of gender, treating particular behaviors or cultural stereotypes as natural isn't that useful for me. Men have a natural need to have what's usually thought of as a type of "authority". At that point, the interpretation becomes more about u...

Re: Pokemon GO!

As someone who still plays on the walking part of my commute* and on weekend walks, the appeal to me has always been two-fold. 1. It's something to do when I'm walking that I don't feel like doing anything else. It's low-focus so I can still think about other things; all I need to do is walk with my...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

^ That's a coincidence. I started Child of Light too. I didn't realize the music had any technical flaws (why would I?), but I can say I don't really remember the battle music. I do like the rhyming being a rule of sorts for the world, as well as the fairy-tale logic of the plot.

Re: Long-time Lunarer, first-time posterer

can I still call them playthroughs when I keep not finishing them? Playintos? "Let's play" seems to get around the principal issue, even if I don't like verbs in my noun phrase. It does make it harder to just pick up and play stuff, though, because I feel irresponsible if I don't note thi...

Re: Pokemon GO!

^ I've noticed that too. I've been playing. Similar to Kizyr, I have several stops and gyms within easy walking distance, and I can catch a few Pokemon from my apartment. I usually reserve playing for when I go on walks. So far, I've mostly only messed with recruiting Pokemon and upgrading them - no...

Re: Ys?

For a long time Ys was a series that I had heard of but had never played. I finally got a chance when The Ark of Napishtim (Ys VI) was released on the PS2. That was a very intriguing action-RPG. I liked being able to switch between three elemental swords. There were enough puzzles to whet the appeti...
