Re: Waiting for the President

Usama Bin Laden That's an acceptable spelling of his name. Wiki sez: There is no universally accepted standard for transliterating Arabic words and Arabic names into English;[9] bin Laden's name was most frequently rendered "Osama bin Laden". The FBI and CIA, as well as other U.S. governm...

Re: Not going

Truthfully, if your goal is to learn the language, I don't know if majoring in it is the solution. It's expensive (often more so for a second degree), and there's really no substitute for living in Japan and working with Japanese speakers. I have a friend on JET who majored in Japanese, and while he...

Sorry, Kiz. I admit I skimmed through the first few comments. I didn't mean that as a dig at you, so sorry if it came across that way.

Re: Not going

Yeah--before my mission, I had first been a computer science major before switching to music and doing a year of music theory courses at the local community college. It wasn't until I had lived in a foreign country and learned Spanish that I learned what I really loved in life--the code-cracking asp...

Re: Not going

Just thought I'd add a second opinion here, even if it's a bit late. When I came to Japan to teach English, it was for the sole purpose of learning Japanese. I was 28 or so at the time (I'm 30 now), and I had been working at a bank making more money and having the type of success that could have led...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

Just beat Lost Odyssey. Started Eternal Sonata. Other games I've logged more than an hour on in the last year: LUNAR SSS (Saturn--stuck in the Red Dragon Cave) Zelda: tOoT (beat it for the first time) New Super Mario Bros. Wii (beat it) Shining Force II (stopped playing midway through--I've beaten i...

Re: Baby name

Our first child: Kelsey Lynn Second: Mia Noele We're expecting our third kid, but aren't sure of the sex. Girl: Kaya (pronounced like Maya with a K--it's a common enough name here in Japan) Boy: Dylan MacKay (grandma's maiden name) I'm surprised I got away with naming a kid after a LUNAR character (...

Re: I passed the JLPT! (N2)

Oh I didn't realize there was a difference between 2kyuu and N2... 2kyuu is what I passed; I took it before the new ones were rolled in. ...great, so this means that the books that I have to prep for 1kyuu aren't as accurate, or what? Does N1 still cover the same material? KF Well, according to off...

Re: I passed the JLPT! (N2)

Congratulations! I passed it a few years ago. I have to say that it remains to-date the most difficult test I've ever taken. I actually technically failed the listening portion, and had to make it up in the other two sections to compensate (reading I had nearly perfect scores on, so that helped). K...

Re: Lose 30 pounds by your next appointment with me....

I lost 20 lbs over the summer, from 232 to 212 (I'm 6'6") by following these steps. Take your time to eat, and stop when you're not hungry--don't eat until you feel full. Drink lots of water. Avoid a lot of juice and soda (they're both loaded with sugar, regardless of the supposed benefits of t...

Stuck in the Red Dragon Cave (Japanese Saturn SSS)

Hey guys! It's been a while since I posted--hectic life, kids, crazy Japan giving me asthma, yada yada yada. I'm playing through the Saturn version of Silver Star Story, and I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to advance in the game. I have no magic and I'm fresh out of starlights (or whateve...

Ready to help

So, I bought a scanner yesterday. I'm living in Japan, so Famitsu mags are cheap and easy to come by. Let me know if you need any help. I'll keep my eyes peeled and try to check Famitsu as much as I can.

Re: I love Japan

I'm planning a trip next year to Japan. Not sure exactly when yet (preferably early summer, before it gets hot and my work starts to get heavier). Maybe I could stop by and visit for a day? Let me know if you come! The bridges that connect Honshu to Shikoku are about 45 minutes away from me (by fer...

Re: I love Japan

The Book-Off in downtown Hiroshima (near the baseball stadium) is really large. You should check it out. You're in a real nice area of Japan, by the way. Have you made a trip to any of the islands? Miyajima is really beautiful. Why did you move out there, anyway? KF I'll be sure to check out the Bo...
